Sardine Run, South Africa

Lesley Rochat, PADI Master Instructor

It’s for good reason that the Sardine Run in South Africa is referred to as the Greatest Shoal and Show on Earth. Rivaling the wildebeest migration, it is the greatest gathering of predators known. Over 20,000 common dolphins, 2,000 bottlenose dolphins, thousands of sharks, various game fish, seals, birds, and the Bryde’s whale (who can swallow 10,000 fish in a single mouthful) all feast on the sardines.

I was very fortunate to witness the incredible baitball shown in this photo, which has gone down in the history of the sardine run as the largest, most spoken about baitball in many years. While my image captures its magnitude and essence, nothing compares to the images forever imprinted in my mind of that incredible experience.

Raja Ampat, Indonesia

Aaron Wong, Underwater Photographer & PADI Divemaster

Raja Ampat has always been high on my list of best dive destinations in the world. While it’s impossible to point out my favorite, as each place offers something different, I will say Raja Ampat comes pretty close. You’ll see everything from whale sharks and mantas to pygmy seahorses and nudibranchs; all of these against some of the most colorful and pristine reefs in the world.

Even the top side of Raja with its sublime scenery of steep, jungle-covered islands, white-sand beaches and hidden lagoons is a tropical paradise holiday in itself. The water is so warm you can dive in your board shorts year-round. What is there not to like?

Silfra Fissure, Iceland

Alex Mustard, Underwater Photographer & PADI Diver

Silfra Fissure in Iceland is an amazing and unique place to dive. There just isn’t another dive in the world like it. For me it is a must do, even if you’ve never dived in cold water before.

Silfra is a crack in the crust of the Earth where the North American and Eurasian continental plates are pulling apart. It is filled with mineral-rich freshwater that offers perfect visibility and is pure enough to drink as you dive. Above the water the landscape is actually quite flat, which makes it pretty amazing when giant stride in the first pool and look down and see the chasm disappearing into the darkness.

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Simon Pierce, Marine Scientist, Underwater Photographer & PADI Diver

It's almost unfair to compare the Galapagos to other dive destinations. Both the diving and marine life is incredibly diverse. The islands are embraced by both cool currents travelling northwest from the South American coast, and warm tropical waters moving south from above the equator.

Everything from penguins to whale sharks live here, and many species are found nowhere else. The islands in the far north, Wolf and Darwin, have the highest biomass of fish documented anywhere in the world. What makes the Galapagos even more special, thankfully, is that the marine life and their habitats are well protected by the Ecuadorian government. Divers here can know that they're both enjoying some of the world's best diving, but their presence is also supporting world-class conservation efforts.
